Al Capone Does My Shirts-Book Recommendation

If you like realistic fiction books, then "Al Capone Does My Shirts"; by Gennifer Choldenko is the perfect book for you! "Al Capone Does My Shirts" is about a 12 year old boy named Moose who lived in 1935, the time of the Great Depression. He had to move to Alcatraz Island because his dad had to take a job as a guard/engineer on Alcatraz Island. It was very hard moving because..... wait, did I mention that Alcatraz Island is a prison?
Personally, I like this book because There are a lot of conflicts and problums in the story, mostly at the middle and end of the book. My favorite character in the story is Piper, Moose's enemy/friend. She's very sly and sneaky. You should really give this book a try! What does everybody else think?

I liked the book. I agree w/ you Jules but I thought the ending could've been better. I didn't like how Natalie didn't make it in to the Esther P. Marinoff. I do think that the author relieved us when she became the first student in the new branch school. I also think that the author gave us an abrupt ending. What a great way to foreshadow the next book: Al Capone shines my shoes. I can't wait to read it. Although I like action books such as Percy Jackson and Alex Rider, I thought that the book grabbed my attention in the first few pages/chapters. I also think that the next book should include a mystery in it. The author has already set us up for a mystery in the first book. I can't wait to read the sequel!!!!

I agree with you Jules, I also think this was a great book and I really want to read the next book Al Capone Shines my Shoes. Although I didn't like how there was no action at all. There was no mystery in it. It was just pretty much telling a kids life. The kid had a very interesting life but she could have put more in it. But I still have to say I loved the book. I think she should put more of Al Capone in the book since he is in the title. I liked how she made Natalie's character and I hope Gennifer answers some of my other questions in the next book. BYE

I agree and disagree with both of you. I also think that the book could have used some more action - and a better ending. I think that the story kind of lead up to a surprise at the end. I think that everyone was expecting an action filled story, where Moose and Al Capone were enemies-not friends. I enjoyed the surprise though. And to be honest, the beginning was a bit of a shock to me too. I was really not expecting to be reading a story about a 12-year-old kid who moved to Alcatraz Island during the Great Depression because of his father's job. I was actually expecting the story to focus more on Al Capone. I also thought that it was going to be more of an action book-I didn't see the surprise coming!

First of all, Natalie did make it to Esther P. Marinoff. the branch was part of Esther P. Marinoff. And texas12 (Jay) I agree that there could of been just a bit more action. you too, Brownie36. But whats your opinion on what happened with Natalie and 104?

First of all, Pichu9000, I am BROWNS36-not BROWNIE36. Second of all, it was Onion 105, not 104 that Natalie held hands with. But, I also do agree with you, I think that it would be nice if Gennifer put more about Natalie and Onion 105 in the sequel, "Al Capone Shines My Shoes".
Can't wait to read it!

I did not enjoy the book,it was boring en-till the end other than that it was quit boring.I would never recommend this book to anyone because it was very boring until the end (last chapter) of part two.

I bet the sequel is about one of Piper's schemes where she makes a shoe service with Al Capone. What do you think everyone?

i agree with all of u, I loved the book but i thought the ending could be better, it was a little too dramatic. I also thought that Al Capone should have been more in the story, and there should have been more action in the book.
I liked how Moose had such a tough life, it made it more interesting. I think moving to a prison in the middle of San Fransisco Bay with the worlds most dangerous criminals was a really cool idea.
Overall i loved the book and i'm really excited to read the next one, Al Capone shines my shoes.

I agree w/ Pichu9000. I liked the book. I didn't like that there was no action. My fav. action series is the Alex Rider series. I cant wait to read the sequel. I couldn't believe that Natalie got into Esther p. Marinoff. WashingtonDCerny said that she didn't make it! I cant wait to read the sequel!

Yes, I do agree with Pichu so far with reading only 80 pages of the book I find it amazing.Gennifer Choldenko is a great author who describes the characters very well.I can relate to the book by my love of history.I think it would be fun to live on Alcatraz in the 30's what do you guys think? =)

How great to see such excitement over a book! Several students in my class have read the sequel, Al Capone Shines My Shoes, so look for the recommendations soon!

I agree with Pichu9000. Considering that Al Capone Does My Shirts involved a laundry scheme.

I really want to read the sequel, but the librian is hogging both copies.

Natalie did NOT get into the Esther P. Marinoff, well, technically she did. She got into a BRANCH school for older students. Natalie was the first to enroll in the school.

I think Natalie and Onion 105 were just talking together. Not much could've happened when Moose was gone. I doubt really anything happened while Moose was gone. It sort of suprised me when Moose lost Natalie, it wasn't like him. He is a responsible brother and I didn't expect him to lose his sister like that, especially to find her with a grown man who has probably commited some of the worst crimes ever!!!!

Well, to be honest, the librarians told me the same thing. I also agree with Pichu9000!

I just finished the sequel. It was a great book. It strangely really didn't have anything to do with Al Capone shining shoes!
I'll put a post up on the book on Monday.

I finally finished Al Capone shines by shoes! It is an awesome book and way better than the first. I agree with Browns36 that it didn't really have that much to do with Al Capone shining shoes.
